4yr old Gateway laptop/vista:display-monitor different sizes

Everything works fine, except the display is about 3 inches narrower than the monitor:

As you can see, I can even drag opened programs (windows?) underneath the blackened right side.
Twice I have played with it for hours and hours, and fixed it.
But I did so many things, then shut it down, only to find it fixed when I started it back up, that I don't know what I did to fix it.
Then it stays fixed, for as long as I use it, until I shut it down for a period of time, to find that it has reverted back to the issue again.
I feel that it is something simple, but all the computer shops want $150 just to open it.
The laptop doesn't even belong to me; I borrowed it to root this phone, and can't very well return it broken.
I sure appreciate any advice someone could offer me. I know there's a lot of you in here that know what's wrong with it; please extend a moment of your valuable time to help me decide what I should do (I am tempted to flash my first custom ROM with it like it
is, since it works fine other than the display. But I think I would be foolish to trust it hooked up to this phone. I really want to say I flashed a ROM before returning it, though).

Thank you very much:confused:

umm .what is the screen size of the laptop.
From the screenshot it looks like your laptop has just messed up resolution :)
1024x768 is 4:3 resolution...
try 1366x768 as a resolution .(which is 16:9)

The monitor is 15"; the display is 13". When I change the resolution (which has two choices: 1024x768, and 800x600), it just changes the..magnification...of the display (everything is bigger, within the display.). But the overall size of the display remains the same.
Oh. And the bottom of the display is "bleeding":

See the cursor bleeding when I go anywhere along the bottom?

Thank you very much for your quick response and trying to help me.

ummm
Try messing with resolutions .Thats the only thing I can think off sorry :(.It is most probably display driver issue .
what about reducing the resolution ? 800x600 or 1024x600 ,you get the drift ..
Try updating display drivers ?

The part of the picture which is missing appears to be just on the right side, also stays the same size when you change screen resolutions. Nothing on the left is missing. Also with the image bleeding at the bottom. That to me looks very much like an LCD panel malfunction in in the laptop, the screen would have to be replaced. Has the laptop received any hard knocks or impacts?

alright i googled around and it's definitely a driver issue .
If I am correct you have roughly 1cm bottom black band and 6-7 cm right band
You need resolution of 1280x800

Alright here is a solution from computing.net.
Basically its a bad EDID
