6 gigs for $30 + Verizon Edge financing

I got a Verizon mailer offering 6 gig of data for $30 if I get a new phone using their new Edge payment system. Good deal?

The general consensus among most is that as far as money goes, Verizon's and most other companies are making out like bandits with this early upgrade plans. It's a really nice program if you like getting new phones often and don't mind paying for that ability, but it is expensive. The other thing to consider is how valuable your unlimited data is.

Since this is about Verizon itself and not about your Razr, I've moved your thread to the Verizon Carrier forum.

jhawkkw, I rarely use more then 2 gigs now so 6 gigs seem pretty safe and I assume Verizon wont allow unlimited for to long.
At an extra $27 a month for the new Droid Maxx it is expensive when paying for it for two years if you dont upgrade after the first year.

It's even more expensive when you consider that the plan you are paying for already has the phone subsidy built it. That is, you could pay the exact same amount (for admittedly less data - but people with the 2GB plans are invited to use Edge as well) as someone who has signed a 2-year contract and gotten a heavily subsidized phone.

Financially, I'd say either stick with unlimited and go to the resale market for your phones, try to get on the $60 2GB loyalty plan and get upgrades, or go prepaid and really save some dough (but you either have to go AT&T or give up 4G data speeds).

from what i remember of the math, you're coming out ahead if you get a new phone every 6 months. if you wait until 9 months, you're starting to fall behind. by the time the contract is up, you'll have paid for your phone in full twice.

so it depends on how often you "gotta have a new phone", or possibly, if you're a klutz you can grab a replacement more quickly.

I think that was the case with T-Mobile jump, but with Verizon edge one of the requirements in order to upgrade is that half the balanced has to be paid off IIRC.

Once you're off contract, I don't know that it's going to be much of a difference if you want a new phone every 12 months. Looking at S3s on Swappa, they average less than 1/2 full retail price (sold prices vs. original list). So either sell your phone for less than 1/2 list price and buy a new $600+ phone every year or "rent" a phone of 1/2 the list price and get a new one every year w/o the hassle of selling it yourself.

Monthly cost is a moot point since you don't get a discount had the end of you current contract if you continue using your "paid for" phone or buy a new/used off contract phone, and you can't get a cheaper plan if you BYOD.

Basically if you are a frequent upgrader and 6GB is enough data for you, Edge looks like a decent compromise. If you keep your phone for longer than 2 years, then sticking with unlimited and buying off contract may be more cost effective. If you use more than 6GB of data per month, then you probably should hang on to unlimited and go the buy/sell route.

Maybe I'm missing something, but that's the way I see it.

with these new data plan incentives to get people to switch to tiered data the 2 major options i am hearing to get people to transfer off of unlimited data is 6gigs for 30 a month without tethering, or 8 gigs with tethering for 50 a month.

with my current plan of 70 for nationwide talk/text, and 30 for unlimited data i would actually save 10 and gain tethering. my highest usage month over the last 12 months doent go over 5gigs, so, for me this would not be a bad option. and as far as the thought that with tethering i might break 8gigs, i would use tethering on a tablet for the same things i would currently just use my phone for while away form home/wifi, just get a bigger screen to use.

i would upgrade to a new maxx right now, but i am not eligible until may. maybe a call to CS can change that for me.
