< 6inch fall, outer screen pooched

Can't believe such a short fall butchered the outer screen so bad. Touch still works and it seems it's just out outer screen, but wow.
Impact was right near the home button/ usb port, fell vertical onto a cork wood floor (softer than most surfaces).
No point on taking pics right now since im leaving the screen protector on just so glass doesn't start to fragment away, it's an absolute mess with all the air voids under the protector and with all the cracks.
Exactly 1 week from purchase.

I guess that's one good thing about my Blackberry, dropped it easily 50+ times with one sliding off the dash and out the window from a moving car @35mph and no harm except minor scuffs in the rubberised coating.
Oh well, i have the blue S3 and could only get a white replacement screen on eBay for now. I have an aluminum shell case with silicon liner for it already but also just bought 3 other cases to try. Love the slim profile of the phone, but what's the point if it needs to be encased in a vault...

That's not good to hear. I still haven't decided whether or not to get insurance. But after hearing this, I may just need to. My Verizon version is enroute, and will be here tomorrow. How much did the replacement screen set you back, and how difficult will it be to fix it?

sorry, forgot to mention the day after that happened my cover arrived. i have put a screen protector on to stop any more fracturing of the screen. everything else seems ok and much as i dont like them i am thinking on getting a flip case for using at my work for extra protection since i work outdoors sometimes.

I never used a case on my X for two years now. Dropped probably 6 times and never broke. Figured this new gorilla glass 2 should be stronger. What does tpu stand for?

TPU is thermoplastic polyurethane.

And a replacement screen was ~$25, it just appears to be the 'top' screen/ protective glass. Coincidentally when I was rooting the phone yesterday I saw on the same site a DIY replacement guide for the lens, How to Replace Broken LCD Screen on Galaxy S3! | GalaxyS3Root.com

I too have a caseless DX which I've dropped a dozen+ times on asphalt and concrete. The only damage from any of those falls are the top and bottom factory bumper pieces which I just replaced for $5 from ebay.

It fell six inches to the floor???

Dropping a survival is a matter of luck sometimes, but I can not imagine a six inch drop to cause this damage.

Most tpu cases that are decent cost $5-$10. Small price for added security. Droid x is aluminum/plastic with rubber coating while the s3 is mainly plastic? Not exactly a comparable comparison in terms of build quality.
