I used to obtain local pre-paid SIMs for the countries I was spending some time in, like the UK or Ireland. But 3 years ago I switched to China Unicom's international plan, which doesn't incur roaming charges for many countries, and gives me 20GB data, and 200 minutes of international calls every month, along with unlimited calls in China.

January 2020 I was in UK, Ireland, and Netherlands for a few weeks using a China Unicom SIM. Had no international travel since then of course.
