Let me preface this review of the HTC 8X by saying I am currently an Android user. I
 
Regarding the live tiles taking up too much space that you can only have five to a screen, you can resize them to 1/4 the size, basically you can have up to 24 tiles on the screen without having to scroll.

Yes, but then you lose the entire reason for them being "Live Tiles". When they're that small, they don't show information.

Not all tiles show info when big. For example, the Gmail tile, do you really need one that big as shown in your picture? For me a small tile showing the number of unread mail is enough. Same for messages and contacts and phone, I won't need them as large. The calendar is understandable, but IE? That one doesn't deserve a tile that big.

For example, this makes better use of space:
