Help A LOT of problems caused by a lock pattern

Hello! I have a Lenovo A390t phone with Android 4.0.3. It wasn't rooted.

I've set a new lock pattern and forgot it. After I entered it wrong too many times, the "did you forget your pattern" option appeared. I tapped it, and instead of asking for my google account, there was a screen that said "Android is upgrading... Optimizing apps X from 54.". When the optimizing was done, it said "Android is upgrading... Starting apps.". Then it repeats and I see the optimizing screen again. It's like this every time I reboot.

I can access the safe mode. I've also tried accessing the recovery mode, but I just see the Android lying on his back. When I push the power button the menu appears for a very short time and I can't read it. I tried connecting the phone to usb and using adb, but it doesn't appear in devices.

How can I reset my phone to the factory settings?

The android on its back is recovery mode. Have you tried pressing power together with one of the volume keys to get the menu?

(I'm not really familiar with stock recoveries, because I always unlock and install a custom recovery shortly after getting a phone, but my recollection is that a power+volume combination is how you get the menu on at least some devices).
