A screen that works outdoors! (transflective)

My Nokia E55 used to be visible in bright sunlight.

Now with the Galaxy I have to choose between using auto brightness draining the battery or risk not seeing the screen outdoors.

Surely there's a Tablet or phone out there with one of the older, less detail but Transflective LCD screens? (not the PixelQi stuff) Google has found me a few links and unless a mistake has been made I can see an option in hacking a new screen into a GalaxyTab but that's all.

What did you end up doing?
Did you find a commercial tablet or install a new, upgraded screen?

Also, does anyone know of any transflective phones or alternatives?

unfortunately I didn't find an answer...
the best I got was a tablet with (I think it was a transflective ) mirasol screen or the notion Adam but both aren't phones.

now I'm wondering if a eink screen could go in a standard android phone of some kind. someone said to me the graphics controller might be a problem but would it be...? the search would be findind a screen to match a phone or finding a phone to match a screen.

is there an eink android tablet with 3g out there? how's about the kindle fire? the nook doesn't have sound or 3g though host mode makes it possible with dongles I don't think its workable.

I also tried the phone matrix for searching specs but finding the transflective old screen seemed hard. can you get any more luck than me?

You might look in a phone shop for the HTC One X and try its screen in bright sunlight.
The screen is amazing good there for a smart phone

Well, the transflective LCD screen of my old, big and heavy outdoor navi is better to see in the bright sun ... but the One X's screen is usable where my other smart phones were not.

Some e-Ink readers run on Android. Probably easier to start from one of those and change the software than to try to graft an e-Ink screen onto a tablet.

Remember that e-Ink is good for static greyscale images, but slow refreshing. So suitability depends a lot on what you use the device for.

Still doesn't seem to exist?

Latest phone I can find with it is the Nokia E55/E52 and they aren't Android.

My SGS II has died so I need a new phone... but there still doesn't seem to be one I can use outside??

Depends where you are. Higher end recent phones have less of a gap between glass and screen, which helps. Brightness and reflectivity vary. So I'd not go as far as saying "none can be used outside" - there should be some better than the S2 anyway.

But no, there's no sign of manufacturer interest in transflective screens. I don't know whether there is some limitation that makes them less attractive in other respects, but it's either IPS or AMOLED right now.

Mine is ancient - all of the flaws I mentioned, it has!

I'm looking for replacement atm myself. Leaning towards the HTC One, but going to check all contenders out hands on before settling.
