A Tale of Two Emails on Galaxy S3 (Newbie)

Frustrating.

I am an iPhone user and Mac owner switching over to the GS3 this week.

I like the phone. Not convinced yet that I won't switch back to the iPhone 5.

The biggest problem I am having is email.

There seems to be two different email programs on the Android phone.'

One is on the home screen. It's a closed envelope with a red @ crest.

The second is located on another screen. It's an open envelope with an M inside.

I set up my GMAIL iMAP account using the closed envelope with the red @ crest. I am guessing that is GMAIL because once I set it up for iMAP it successfully brought all my email folders over from my MAC desktop.

However, every time I get an email notification and launch that notification from the notifications screen, it opens up in another email, which I am guessing is the open envelope with the M inside it.

Why are there two different email programs running?

Actually, I prefer the one I was using (the closed white envelope with the red @ seal) because that imported all my Mail Subfolders over and the "M" email did not.

Notifications are screwed up because apparently I am using two different email programs.

Anyone recommend how I can sort out this mess?

I will have other questions I am certain, so thanks in advance for the help.
 
The icon with the open envelop is the GMail app. The other one with the closed envelope with the @ is a generic email app.

Since you already have your GMail setup in the Generic Email app, go to settings > Accounts and Sync and go to Google. Uncheck Sync email. Your Gmail will still come through the generic email app.

Next, go into the app with the open envelop with the M (Gmail app) and go to setting. Uncheck notification and you will no longer get notifications from this app.

This is how I have my phone setup.

Excellent advice. Did what you suggested. Let's see what happens. The "M" has disappeared from the top status bar which is what I wanted.

Now...

I want Google Mail notifications/alerts to appear.

Do I just go into the stock app (the one with the red @ crest) and turn on notifications? I take it I can also assign it notification alert tones?

This is where Android beats iPhone, choice. You can use any email application you want.

I sort of agree.

The problem is, as a newbie at this, I am very confused by two different email apps being given as stock. Someone who doesn't know better (me) uses the one that probably should not have been used.

BTW, is this the best email program Android has got? Really would love an ultra-customizable email program if there was one. Hoping now that Google has bought Sparrow that their email client will be made available. It blows away everything that I have seen here.

Yes, if you have multiple emails, each email can have its own ring tones. You set this in settings.

I am noticing a couple problems with the stock email app (closed envelope with red crest)

1. New emails are not automatically downloading although I have it set to update every 5 minutes.

2. Also have notification turned on under my account but nothing is being pushed to the notification bar (along the top of the phone) or the Notification pull-down screen.

3. Even though I have a ringtone selected, it is not playing when new mail arrives.

Previously it seemed to be working. I wonder if disabling the "M" client screwed things up.

Tried K-9. Great email program. However, after setting up via iMap it did not import over all my subfolders from my Apple Mail the way that Gmail did.

Hmm. Not sure why. I don't use notification sounds. In the notification bar I get a white envelope with a green @ symbol when a new email arrives.

Yeah, nothing is being pushed any longer to the notification screen since making those changes.

The settings to have notifications pushed...

Do you do that through the stock email client settings or the system settings?

I have it through the stock email settings.
 
In accounts and setting select the email account and make sure sync is checked. In the email app, make sure notifications is checked for the notification bar. This is how mine is setup.

Wish I could select check mail every minute (I get a lot of emails).

I know it's a hassle, but it's much easier if you use the email apps designed for each use.

As you know, the 'alternative' email app (with the @) will handle any email address. Mine has two Hotmail accounts set up in it.

The Gmail app is obviously designed to handle your Gmail address (i have mine set up here also)

This will not cross notify on emails.

In the Gmail app You can go into settings > tap the name of your account and set the sync options to sync every x minutes or use push (live timing)

In the alternative email app you can goto options > sync options to set it for your alternative accounts.

Here (for both apps) you can also set ringtone/vibrate options etc.
