Accessing 2nd GMail Account on my Android phone & tablet

jo69

Android Enthusiast
Hi I want to occasionally check my 2nd Gmail account on my phone
Not add it to my phone though.
All my main email goes to the first account on my computer.
Don't I want another account there.

I used to be able to sign into the account I have on my PC on my phone and just view the email in that account or send an odd email
But now if I try to do that it says add it to my phone accounts

I don't want to do that as like all my main email going to the PC not cluttering up my phone
Is there still a way please to just sign in and check and send an odd email without adding it to my phone?

Hi jo69, you don't say exactly how you are accessing gmail but if you use a browser and go to gmail you should be able to access your individual accounts on a one time basis ie log in/log out.

I do have all my accounts in my gmail app but can still access each one separately using my browser.

:)

I used to be able to do that.
But now i get a message coming up saying add the account to my gmail account on my phone.
I dont eant to add it. Just access it occasionally.
I am accesing in through my phone or tablet browser. Also tried through the desktop site on my phone
But still the same.

What browser are you using? My stock browser and Dolphin have no such message but Chrome is slightly different in that it has specific option to 'Go incognito or sign in temporarily', and has an option to 'Manage accounts'.

Hi

Can confirm you can still do one off logins if you use a browser other than chrome, at least with the ones I've tried.

Sorry .. One off logins?

Is that where i log out of my gmail account on my phone and attempt to login the 2nd gmail account in my browser?

Am using chrome and it just wont let me access another gmail account without adding it to my phone.

As both Girolez and I have commented there is something different with Chrome - probably because it's a Google product as is gmail and Google is what Google is.

I would suggest that you try using a different browser. As I said in my second post my HTC One stock browser and Dolphin allow me to log in/out of individual accounts with out a problem and as Girolez commented 'using a browser other than Chrome'.

Having said all that, gmail accounts are not actually on your device, they are on Google servers and as with any webmail you access those accounts via the internet with either the gmail app or a browser.

:)

Thanks for the advice. Its annoying because i could access the 2nd account no prob until recently. But if i sign out of my phone gmail and open my browser and try to sign into the 2nd account it just opens the 1st one! So annoying. I really dont want all that mail going to my phone. You think the only answer is to install another browser then? Wouldnt use it for anything else.

Yes, I suspect so, the recent change could be due to Chrome being updated - I think Google apps are being prepared for Android 5.0, Maps has just had an update and Chrome has had at least one update recently. I know that both Dolphin and Opera, as well as my HTC stock browser let me log in/log out of individual gmail accounts.

I assume Chrome is the stock browser on your Nexus, what is it on your LG?

:)

Hi again

I think its just the chrome browser that will want you to install the google account before connecting to it. Any other browser should work, and naked works with multiple google accounts on one phone. Actually its a really fast and secure browser if you can live without the fancy graphics that others provide.

Will stick with it for awhile and see how it goes. And i get the hang of it lol.

If i dont what would be the next best one for me to try?

Small file?

Really dont like chrome on my pc either.

Thanks again for solving my problem.

You can add the account to your phone & then turn off all the synching. That way, you could manually check it in your email or gmail client. Other times, it would just sit there doing nothing.
The only downside is that it may alert you to sign in every time you access your Gallery.

Sounds good but wont it download loads of mail that i dont want on my phone when i do check it?

Yes, but you can check them off and delete them en masse.
I don't think there's a perfect way to do what you want.

My husband and I share a calendar and we did it by creating a separate g account, adding it to both our phone and setting it to sync ONLY the calendar.
Not perfect, but functional.

Google/android really isn't set up to be plastic enough, IMHO, but it sure beats Apple/iphone.

Thanks for replying Melissa.
Thats another option then.
If i did add the 2nd email account and stop it syncing anything at all, what happens when i open it in the gmail app?
Does it auto sync then? Or is it possible for me to just send an email through it?

Ps i love my android phone and tablet. Most people i know have an iphone but it doesnt tempt me at all.

I just did a quick test using my gmail app & switching to our 'calendar only' account. First screen was a sync choice: now/once or change settings. I could get no further without choosing.
I think the answer is that you must at least sync once each time you switch into that account.
I don't know how much mail you receive on this a/c, but you can leave it on the server, and you can quickly select & delete it in your app inbox.

Thanks Melissa. Learn something new every day.lol
Got lots of options thanks to all you folks

You can press the letter icon in the list of emails & the letter will turn into a checkmark. When you do this, the delete icon will appear at the top of the page & you can delete all checked items.
