Accessing broken screen device not in USB Debugging.

I've become lost in the sea of information! I apologize if this question has been answered, not sure what to search to find my answer. When I do search, I find my self going down bunny trails or getting stuck out in the weeds~!

I know just enough about Android to be dangerous, please use little words when replying ;)

My neighbor has a Samsung Galaxy Amp Prime, from Cricket wireless that he broke the screen on. He is not tech savvy, so it's HIGHLY doubtful his phone was set to USB Debugging. He took it to Cricket, hoping they could extract his contacts and some pictures he's taken. No, he has never backed it up so that's not an option, I asked. I don't know what they did at the Cricket store but when I plug it in to my PC, there is NO data. Oh, forgot to mention, it does turn on but the screen is DEAD dead dead. I don't even see the file structure I'd expect. I'm assuming it's in Mass Storage mode because when I connect it my PC recognizes it as an external storage device. I'm beginning to think they wiped it. I've downloaded and tried a few apps that claim to access dead phones like Vysor and another who's name escapes me. The issue with them is, most don't support this phone. I went so far as to buy what I thought was a device that would connect the phone to a monitor and allow me to also connect a mouse and keyboard, similar to an OTG cable. But, the connector was wrong. It had a USB C and I need a USB Micro B. The reason I tried this is because one of the apps I tried said the phone was locked and needed to be unlocked before it could access it. So close... He said he's never set up a screen lock though. I'm grasping at straws now. I thought if I could mirror the screen to a monitor, I could at least see what was happening. Maybe use a mouse to swipe or click whatever was locked. Anyway, it didn't work. I contacted the manufacturer of that adapter, hoping they had one with Micro B, but no they didn't. Another brick wall. Just as well, I don't know if his phone supports external monitors anyway.

Do any of you Gurus out there have any tricks I can try to see if there is any content left on the phone? He really only wants the photographs he took, everything else is replaceable. There has to be a way to get into this phone and extract his photos, right? Or, did the Cricket person wipe it and that's why I'm not seeing anything much as a file structure? I hate to give up, the photos were pretty important to him.

Thanks in advance,
Farmalldude
