Accessing Steps Count

Apologies if this is a little basic for this community but I was wondering if anyone knows how to get the step count from a wearable device?
I'm looking at developing a sports app with a wearable component and I'd like to just tell the watch to give me the step count at the start of the activity and then the step count at the end of the activity then I have the activity's number.
Maybe I've missed something obvious somewhere but I'm stuggling at the moment.
