activate sleep mode manually

LG Spectrum.
Screen goes blank during call. Have to unlock to activate speaker phone or volume or to disconnect. Changed sleep time to 10 min in settings. Now stays "up" longer then necessary.
Is there a way to activate sleep mode when I want?

After some checking, I see that the LG Spectrum has a proximity sensor, meaning it senses when the phone gets close to your face during calls.

Go phone (as if placing a call) > settings > turn off screen during call

Uncheck the box
