I presume you've enabled USB Debugging?
Also, if Sony's PC Companion is running in the background, disable/kill that and try again.

Is the system up and running with USB debugging turned on?
Does "adb devices" return the serial number or nothing?
If nothing, you're likely missing the adb drivers.
