Add msn account to gmail app 2-step verification

Hey guys, I've been having an issue adding my msn e-mail account to the new Gmail app, as they say they now support microsoft emails as well as some others. The thing is I have two-step verification on my msn account. Is that the reason? I tried to make an app password like the microsoft site says to for apps after you turn on two-step, but it still won't connect. Do you guys know the settings/steps of how to get it connected?
