adobe flash player 10.1 app. What does it actually do?

Hello,
I'm running low on disk space and need to ditch some apps.
Adobe flash player takes up 12 meg. It's my biggest one.
And I'm not sure what it actually does.
I presume it's important.
I never have the need to fire it up but I'm guessing it's an app that works automatically when needed online.
But I'm only guessing.
Can someone more clever confirm that or let me know I'm talking rubbish :).
Also, on the same subject, the whole reason I downloaded it in the first place was so I could watch tvcatchup which requires flash.
But even though I have this player I still can't watch the tv on my htc desire. Any ideas why not?
Any help gratefully received.

You've got the right idea. If you want Flash content to displayed on a webpage, keep it installed. If you don't care for it, feel free to remove it.

The beauty of Android. Choice :)

Bingo.
Much appreciation foo. It works on the installed browser.
Quick question. Would that be because I have flash installed?
Again, many thanks, most useful.

Ahh, Opera doesn't support Flash (yet). Try using the stock browser for tvcatchup.

(app drawer > Browser)
Opera Mobile does support Flash (this is the browser of my choice).
Opera Mini does not support flash.

Stock browser starting from Android v2.2 also supports flash.
