I'm not a big user of such things on android (I prefer to use a computer). I currently have the MS Office apps on both phone and tablet, but rarely use them to create documents. There are various third party "office suits" available, but I've not really used any of them (some of the developers have a reputation of being a little iffy). They're all free to install, so you could test some and see if any feel better to you.
Of course you can also do this with Google Docs. If you save in Google Docs format it will be stored in Google's cloud, but it can also save as Word documents, and those can be saved to Google or just on device. On a phone it's probably a little more responsive than Word, so might be worth giving a try.
