is there any way to get rid of the pop ups that happen on the screen, tiny little anoying little boxes, that if you happen to touch near, go to a web page for the sneaky little bas**rds... I guess I should have expected a google device to do that, but I never thought of it....

does rooting allow you to get away from that?

Ya know all those free apps and games you download. Those ads are how the developers get paid a little something for their time, knowledge and expertise. Without those "ads" , there wouldn't be nearly as many free apps. And yeah, when you accidentally touch the ad a web page opens, but a quick press of the back button quickly gets you right back to what you were doing.
Most free apps have ads. Paid apps don't. If you really like an app buy it and get rid of the ads. Most apps are only a few bucks or less. I'm just sayin......

Popups?

Many apps have ad banners, but not popups. Are you sure you didn't install some piece of malware?

If you root your phone you can use AdFree. It blocks all the major banner farms, including AdMob, AdSense, and the other ads by Google.

^^This.

Yes, the ads are annoying (especially in Angry Birds), but they help keep a lot of apps/games etc free so I've no real issue with them. I'll even click an ad once or twice if I really like the app and there isn't a paid version.
