Advice for a newcomer

Hi all, first post on the forum, glad to be here.

I've been a blackberry user for about 6 years - I've had my own blackberry on my companies network. Now the company is switching to company issued blackberries so when my personal contract is up I'm free to get a new phone. I'm likely to stay on T-Mo but am seriously interested in Android since as a java programmer the idea of building apps on this type of platform seems interesting.

Now that the boring background stuff is out of the way a few questions:

- What are the main complaints people coming for a BB have with the Android based phones?

- Since I can control (somewhat) when I buy the phone would you recommend buying something that is currently available or waiting for some new phones? Which ones?

- Anything else someone like me should know before taking the plunge?

Thanks in advance,

I have also used blackberries extensively, and can only give you my opinions.

The BB platform is ultra solid, and this gives tremendous confidence. The Android platform is far nicer to use, but will trip a little from time to time. You do need to make sure you keep your device nice and organised, and kill the apps you aren't using.

Touchscreen will be a learning curve (see what I did there?), but depending on what device you have come from you will find a nice fit for keyboard needs on the app market. Try touchpal. It has a suretype clone.

As I have said before - to me the devices are just portals to the android system. The hero has a good camera and decent amount of RAM - but people have been doing things with their G1's that would defy most 'berrys.

Well in my situation I'm still going to have a berry - it just won't be "my phone" it will be my company's. That is exactly why I want an Android, something to play around with and do "fun stuff" with and since I don't have and don't want a MAC developing on the iPhone is pretty much out.

That leads me to my bigger question about which phone to get. I still want to have a phone that doesn't limit some of the basic stuff I'd like out of my "fun" phone. From TMo in the US it seems like the G1 and the myTouch are my only 2 options, is that truly the case? I know the G1 is pretty solid, but I do want a phone with a slightly smaller form factor.

I'm a BB user getting ready to take the dive into Android. What I like most about the BB is how common sensible (is that a phrase?...hehehe) it is. Especially the Calendar. Love how I am able to call a phone number/email from whatever app I'm using. Basically the little things that the BB did is what I will probably miss...hope the android does it similar to the BBs.

I hear that you can't call or email directly from the Calendar on the iPhone. (if you have a phone number or email typed into a calendar event...you can't click on it to call or email).
