Root Advice on a good Custom Rom.

Well, I managed to root my Asus Nexus 7 today using Wugfresh's Root Toolkit. This loaded TWRP 2.3.3 recovery onto my device during one of the steps. I went on to download CyanogenMod 10.1 AOSP 4.2.1 JellyBean from here, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2053187 and set about trying to load it.

Unfortunately, I am getting status 7 errors during install, so am guessing there is a problem between TWRP recovery and this ROM. So, I bagged it.

I am looking for a nice ROM, that will improve performance and battery life, maybe offer some new features, but not overly themed. Something fairly easy to install given my current recovery setup as well.

Any advice appreciated!

I believe you need to install the latest version of TWRP(grouper) for CM10.1 (and probably others) to install properly.

I love CM10.1 and have been running nightlies until the Milestone came out and have been running it since without a hitch.

I recommend Motley kernel for it, and probably any other rom as well.

Paranoid Android 3 is out. Probably one of the baddest ROMs available, and well supported for nexus devices.

SmoothROM is an old fav of mine too.

Another question.. TheAtheistReverend - The way you talk about loading nightlies, almost seems like you are changing or updating your overall ROM on a daily basis, sort of like the way I change my shirts..

How are you pulling this off.. Are you running a full nandroid backup prior to loading the rom, loading the rom, and running a full nandroid restore? Or... is there potentially less to it.

Please let me know.. I am still a noob to Android, but I make my living working on Linux servers installed in Hospitals. I am not a noob to tech. Thanks!!

No, i don't update to every nightly. Too much hassle and risk for me. I'm now sticking with the "Milestone" that came out recently, which is considered stable. Before that, I was using a nightly that I had no issues with. Some people update every nightly, and the best way to do that is through the CM updater in settings. No need to do anything other than* install it (automated). It doesnt require setting up all your apps and settings again or wiping anything. It is very very easy. You'll see once you get in to it.

*ALWAYS have at least one good NAND backup on your device, AND one copy of it backed up to your PC or a memory stick. I still have a NAND of my favorite nightly in case I find a problem with this version.

I am much more of a noob with linux, but have been venturing into it on my laptop. I love it. Currently running Mint.

Does this make a little more sense? Or am I babbling a little? I do that sometimes :D

EDIT: It looks like the "milestone" is now call a "Monthly snapshot"

yes, update twrp in goo manager (menu, install open recovery script). latest is 2.4.0 for grouper (nex7).

i'm running carbonrom, liquidsmooth before that (the carbon guys split from liquid last month). both are excellent.
