So there you are, you've boarded your flight, ready to get home or back to work or whatever it is. Business or pleasure you're ready to be there. You've dealt with security lines and all the other hassles associated with modern airline travel...and then a couple of idiots get into a screaming match. They won't stop, even when the flight attendants try to get them to settle down, and finally the captain diverts the flight.
Yes, I know, our first thought is to simply disarm one of the cabin doors, strap oneself in and toss these chuckleheads into the great beyond, but that's really not practical.
What happens to them is actually pretty mild (now it's state law, and in this case they were charged with disorderly conduct, which typically is a misdemeanor in most places), particularly when you consider how many people are inconvenienced and what it costs the airline. In fuel and landing fee costs alone, it's stunningly expensive.
So here's my proposal. If you agree, write your congresspersons. Start with the members of the transportation committee.
Ask them to pass Federal legislation providing three things: If by your conduct you cause a flight diversion, you are banned from flying on any commercial flight for one year, and in addition to a fine (that they already levy), you are also required to pay the amount of $50 -- per passenger -- as partial compensation to the other passengers you inconvenienced (excepting the other combatants, of course).
Finally, you are also required to reimburse the airline for any actual damages that result from your idiocy, including landing fees, fuel costs, food and accommodations for other passengers, etc. This amount is jointly and severally payable by all of the morons involved in the incident.
Still, luckily for such dunderheads, our congress is too clueless to do anything that would be that simple...
