Airave set up with IP cameras

I finally got my airave working (and it works great for voice and data!). I have it set up modem, airave, router. I have two ip cameras working thru my router via wireless. I had problems at initial set up. Sprint told me I had QoS issues from my Comcast service. I finally tried unplugging my ip cameras and then the set up went fine. Not sure if this was why it setup this time or not considering when I set up the Airave, the router is not plugged in so no IP cameras!? I understand that the Airave being first in line hogs enough bandwidth for itslef. I am OK with this. Now when I plug in my IP cameras, I can't access then thru the internet. Wondering if any folks have input about my IP cameras not working. Also input about how I can figure out how much bandwidth I need. I think I have 15/5 from comcast (confirming with Comcast).

BTW, streaming Netflix seems to work OK. I have yet to stress the system with calls and streaming, etc.

hello,

please please please do yourself a favor and put the airvana BEHIND the ROUTER not in between!!! i dont care what sprint says you are wasting bandwidth by doing this. please do yourself a favor.

just so you have background on me, I have had both versions of these units (still have the first one boxed up) and obtained them BOTH on launch day. Ive had the latest version since its launch and it has always sat BEHIND the router.

I have comcastic 26/5 and i have TWO cisco wireless IP cameras. I use a camera app, IP Cam Viewer – Android Hit-Mob.com , on the EVO and the xoom. this app controls movement of the cameras and sound is heard thru the app.

anyway what model IP cams do you have? they should not be causing any issues with your LAN/WAN. Ive been using these IP cameras for several years.

once you start taxing your bandwidth and you still have the airvana in front of the router, you will start to notice delays in your data service. again do yourself a favor and put the airvana on a port on your switch/router.

I have 2 foscams. I've been reluctant to try that setup but I guess I have to. Just is a pain with the airave boot time and all!

im confused, and pardon my direct question but, what does the airvana boot time have to do with putting it behind the router?

hey if you do not want to make the adjustment to the airvana, by all means leave it ahead of the router. Its your network and your bandwidth and your money so far be it for me to try and make you do something you are reluctant to do.

The only reason the second generation femtocell (airvana) asks to be ahead of the router is for the QoS for its VoIP feature--which Sprint has not currently activated. VoIP, as Im sure you may know, needs dedicated bandwidth for Voice calls. For mobile handset calls, the bandwidth needed to send voice data form the handset thru the network to sprint is much less than whats needed for VoiP calls.

again if you are not comfortable then leave as is. I am giving you my experience with these units (over 2-3 years) and can assure you the airvana second generation unit works fine behind the router. Leaving the unit ahead of the router will reduce your data speeds.

Feel free to search the long airave thread on this sprint forum as well as over the world wide web and you will see what others are doing.

much success to you.

thanks. i was thinking that might have been the reason.

The airave takes about 20-30 minutes to boot. More of my issue (I have newborn twins in the house!).

Anyhow, I re-ordered as you mentioned and things came up OK. My cameras are up now.

This did not work when I first plugged in the Airave out of the box. Seems to be fine now. Maybe being connected allowed a software update? Not sure.

Any thoughts on the amount of bandwidth I should get from Comcast to support this? I know it is a bit off topic but I'd like to aniticipate having enough before my wife drops a call because of it.

Thanks a lot for the input. I don't post much but do read thru alot and find a lot of good info on this forum and the one for the EVO Shift. You guys are a good group.

I have an AirRave too. I have it set up to be connected to my Router and not connected directly to my Cable Modem. Sprint told me to put it in-between, but I know better. It works great most the time. I usually have to re-start it once a month or so. Pretty happy with it and it was free through customer-retention. I love Sprint!

s_anella,

that long boot up time is the gps lock. that will happen regardless of where in the chain the device is patched. subsequent bootups after the initial setup should happen faster.

good to hear you made progress.

Cant delete my post or I would...Just found out my Airave wasnt activated when it arrived like I was told it would be...all works great now after that phone call...
