AK Notepad: Powerful yet simple

When I first powered up my first Android phone, I was shocked to find out Android didn't come with a default note taking problem. While at first, I thought this was a huge oversight on Google's behalf, I soon realized this allows the user to download the note program that's right for the user. After searching through the Android Market and trying out a bunch of programs, I've selected AK Notepad as my default note taking app.

On the surface, AK Notepad is a simple note taking app that allows you to quickly take notes and save them for later use. It's perfect for when you have to write a quick reminder or note, such as a shopping list or where you parked your car. For users who want just a simple note taking app this does the trick without being over-complicated.

Beneath this simplicity though is a lot of other great features. AK Notepad allows you to quickly search through all your notes to find what you're looking for. It also has a neat label feature; when in a message, if you put a "#" in front of a word, you give it that label and can now easily sort through your messages by label. It's quite a powerful feature.

On top of searching, AK Notepad offers you a lot of options for sharing your notes. You can easily move a note to E-mail, Facebook, Twitter, or an SMS message by simply clicking the sharing button. Alternatively, you can pin a note to any of your homescreens as a reminder or for quick access.

Speaking of reminders, the app has a remind feature which you can set to remind you of something. The notification can use the LED indicators, ringtones, and window shade notifications.

In October 2009, AK Notepad became a part of Snaptic, Inc, and the program also allows you to backup your notes using a Snaptic account for free. The developer is regularly improving the program with new features and to improve performance (although on my Droid running Android 2.1, I've never had a problem).

Overall, AK Notepad is a great program. It has a lot of powerful features, but they don't get in the way of the simple task of writing a note. You can open the app and take a quick note within seconds, and I think that's the best definition of what a good note taking program should do.
