Help Alarm wont go off unless clock is an open apllication?!

Triple X

Newbie
The past 2 morning my alarm has failed to go off at all, this is since updating to gingerbread via kies, before that i had no issues with the alarm.

Ive noticed the alarm works if the clock is left as an open application, if i close all active applications the alarm fails to go off.

Anyone else have this issue and know of a way to sort this?!

Cheers

My alarm is giving me problems aswell since i've updated to android 2.3
It seems it wont go off when something is openend, like messages.

overslept like 3 times for the past 2 weeks, my boss aint happy:confused:

This was a regular problem in 2.1 and it was indeed a shame that a simple feature such as an alarm wasnt reliable in a high end phone. But after updating to Froyo and 2.3.3 havent experienced the problem. Did you factory reset your phone after upgrade?

Yep - did a full reset. I had no problems before upgrading, I don't think the alarm's worked since.

Have tried alarm clock + and it too has the problem, ie unless left active it wont set the alarm off.

I too have slept in leaving me late for work!

Havent done a factory reset, will i lose my apps and data if i do?

just wait untill a new update arrives.
until then use this app.
'Alarmdroid'.
Always used this app and never got trouble. I didn't even know there was a problem with the normal alarm function of the Galaxy until a friend told me about it.
Alarmdroid works fine, even on the 2.3.3 version.

Thanks for the suggestion although just tried alarmdroid and it suffers the same problem as the stock alarm, unless its left as an active application it fails to go off.

Will have to wait for update, until then i'll have to remember to set my alarm just before lights out.

Cheers!

Hmm, can you please explain what do you mean by leaving as an active application? Otherwise how do you close it? Also in date and time settings are you using network provided values?

The clock program has to be running in task manager for the alarm to function, if it isnt running then no alarm.

Tried both options in date and time setting and either way no difference.

After upgrading to 2.3.3 the phone runs quite fast and there isnt any need to use a task manager. Having said that it still shouldnt be a problem as I remembered having killed the clock in Froyo and still alarm used to work.

Which task manager are you using? What you can do is add the clock to the "Ignored" applications so that it is not killed by the task manager and see if it works.

I just use the default Galaxy S task manager, I habitually go into it to close applications and often just hit close all if I've I'm done fiddling with the phone for five minutes.

I also just use the default task mananger, and if you open up the standard clock app it will then be listed in the task manager as an active application.

Even if i leave the clock as an active application in the task manager if i then mess around with the phone, go on the internet, play a game, the clock will sometimes have dissapeared as an active app.

I have to remember to set the alarm the last thing before lights out, so its the only active app, for it to actualy work, very poor!

I'd never actually used the alarm on my SGS, so I thought I'd test it out to see if I could reproduce the problem. I set an alarm which duly went off even though the clock app was closed down and not running in the Task manager.
Then I tried it with the phone switched off, and the alarm failed to go off. That shouldn't be the case, as every other phone I've ever owned has allowed me to switch the phone off and still use the alarm.

But Android doesnt allow that. I read somewhere someone from Google had said that the state of Android OS is not known when it is switched off. It can have many variable states. Thus its not possible to make an alarm go off with the phone switched off.

You can switch your phone to airplane mode but with the phone switched off it doesnt work.

So, the mighty Android can't do alarms then. The more I use this Samdung the more I'm getting to hating it. The satnav doesn't work, no lock screen notifications, no screensaver and poor Wi-Fi connectivity to name but a few shortcomings of Android/Samsung.

While you have every right to hate samsung/Android I have found that using a 3rd party app such as "GPS TEST" hugely improves GPS connectivity. For lock screen notifications you may try NOLED or Maybe widgetlocker also.

What firmware are you running on it though, mine was fine on Froyo but the problem arised after updating to Gingerbread.

Im running 2.3.3 JVH so maybe thats the difference.

Is your frimware an official release or one for a rooted phone? I have no interest in rooting so doing this all officially.

Cheers.

My firmware is from samfirmware.com and was flashed via odin, not kies.
2.3.4 should be available via kies anytime now but I can't say for sure as kies isn't working for me so I don't bother using it.

Thanks for your input, i will wait patiently for the official update which as you say hopefully wont be too far off, fingers crossed my alarm will then function normally.

Triple X, what exactly are you doing: clear everything in Task Manager, set up your alarm and then what? Do you do anything or you just let the screen go to sleep by itself?

I noticed that after you set up your alarm and hit the back button, the Clock is not listed as an Active application in Task Manager, but if you set up your alarm and then hit center button it will remain as an active application.

Regards!
