I see them building up todays, yesterdays and the precious days alerts - responses to my query.

I am using Safari on my desktop computer and going directly to the web site.

If you click on the little bell in the upper right, it will list your alerts and that should mark all of them as "read" and reset the counter. If you want to manage what you get alerted to, then go to https://androidforums.com/account/alert-preferences and set your alert preferences. There's no need to clear them.
