All cams cannot save pix within apps - older pix disappeared

Hello,
I own two samsung devices: a smartphone GT-I8262 duos and tablet Galaxy Note 10.1 GT-8020, both with Android 4.1.2.
Until about 10 days ago I had no prolems.

Since then:
1. Both my app cams (default camera and A Better Camera) can NOT save pictures anymore on both devices, as long as I make those pix within my two financial apps: EasyMoney and Financisto (pix of bills etc.). A Better Camera says 'can't save data' and Camera seems to save something, but it is just a grey thumbnail.
2. Outside those apps the cams work normally.
3. Other cams I tried have the same problem.
4. The worst of it all: ALL PREVIOUSLY MADE PICTURES IN EASYMONEY AND FINANCISTO ARE GONE. My digital bookkeeping is missing essential information now (around 2 years of pix), since I deleted the relevant bills after the pix were previously stored correctly.

Questions:
1. How to make both cams work again within the apps?
2. How to get my old pix back? With various recovery apps it was not successful. My devices are NOT rooted. I hesitate heavily to do that or have it done.

I hope any support is available

Are the pictures stored on a SD card? If so then it's likely that the card has problems.

Edit: sorry, I missed the part that said this happened simultaneously on two different devices so my first question is irrelevant.

Wierd, and I'm afraid I can't offer any suggestions at all.

Indeed, the SD card is ok: can save other stuff, just not the saved pix.
And it happened simultaneously on both devices, around 10 days ago.
Searching for similar complaints I found 2 suggestions that Google might be the culprit due to a recent update of KitKat - whatever that may be. The authors suggested that Google made it impossible for 3rd party apps to save stuff to the SD card. But this is not the problem either, because the Samsung stock Camera has the same problems...

Anyone?

Shouldn't be the SD card, because apps save to internal memory usually, not the SD card. Second, it can't be Kitkat on your case if you didn't do a system update to Kitkat (Android 4.4). Did you? What version of Android are you running? Are all apps with a camera misbehaving?

All cams that I tried (stock, favorite, others) have the same problem.
I only came across the non-saving-issue with EasyMoney and Financista, those are the only apps that I use with cam.
I use Android 4.1.2, never upgraded any KitKat.
Strange is that it started to happen about 10 days ago, on both devices.
And worst of all: that all my OLD (2yrs bills) are undetectable...

Still any suggestion?

That's weird. You did not do anything prior to this happening? Try going into Settings>applications>all>camera app>clear data

But I am afraid that by doing that I will delete more data, even...
Not aware of anything weird that I did prior to the problems, also because then I would have made this mistake twice, on both devices - and with multiple cameras....

Deleting the app data from the camera app simply removes all settings on it. Even if there was no problem, doing that won't touch the saved photos.

Done - but no result, same problems as before.
In the meantime I noticed a Google+ sync problem. Could it be related?
In settings > accounts > Google I instruct Google to sync my picasa web albums.
It starts syncing, but all I see is empty boxes wit album names.
This too happens on both my Samsung phone and my tablet.
The mystery continues....
