All my contacts were cleared!

So i did a factory reset on my phone, and before i did it, i did the "All Backup" basically putting everything to my SD card. When i turned my phone back on and placed the SD card in, there was NO contacts, I lost all my contacts, but didnt lose any of my pictures. Not even sure if that makes sense at all, but now my phone is completely empty of contacts. I went into my contacts and clicked menu > manage contacts > restore from SD, and i got this "scanning SD failed (reason: "no vcard file found on the SD card) what does that even mean?
& How can i prevent losing my contacts in the future? because i can not afford to lose them all again ):

What phone are you talking about here? My phone doesn't have a "backup" option so I can't help with that.
