(Almost) everything just went

Phone rebooted itself. My screens (home etc) just all half cleared, Widgets gone. Most folders gone. ⅔ of apps gone (but are still installed). I did a reboot and then a hard reboot. Still nothing.

What happened?

Can I get it all back?

Hi, sorry for the issues you're having with your device, but I'm glad you posted this problem because it's giving me even more insight on why I shouldn't purchase it yet. But from what you've explained sounds like you have an update issue vs a device malfunctioning issue. Have you checked for updates for the device lately? That's a brand new phone and shouldn't be having that type of issue unless it's been mishandled due to drops and what have you. But I would most definitely check for updates to see if there's an update ready for your device and see if that fix the issue.

No idea what happened there!
I have not seen or heard of that problem (On Note 8's)

(Sometimes rooted devices can do strange things like that, depending on the ROM used)

Are the apps still on your Note 8?

I have never had any problems with my Note 8 at all - it had a big update shorty after I received it but it went smooth.

Everything is still there - apps and widgets and all bought fonts. Various shortcuts gone along with the widgets but nothing actually gone. Card is fine. Checked immediately on updates. Nothing new recently and all up to date. First reboot after the crash happened into safe mode (I may or may not have caused that). Then rebooted normally.

Just spent some hours reconstituting everything. Sort-of useful to do it clean after a few weeks. A bit more tedious with the various file shortcuts with my own custom icons. That will have to take a while. A number of specialist folders but pretty much there with them now.

Nothing serms to have reset itself in terms of preferences and all browser (3 at the moment) Bookmarks still there.

Really weird.

That sounds like there is a launcher issue. Do you use a third party launcher? Or maybe in the process of a TouchWiz update, something corrupted the configs. If everything is still there (at least in the app drawer) and it all still works, then it's definitely a launcher.

FWIW, most third party launchers let you back up settings and home screens so if you need to reinstall, you can put it all right back the way it was.

Not a 3rd party launcher but point taken about back-up facility if such were available.

If you a re rooted, all bets are off. This is becaue rooted devices can impose other issues conventional , stock non rooted users wont see.

If its not rooted, its mostly likely a rogue app.

Something like that does not happen. Its not a hardware issue most likely. This OS is a stable release and not some alpha or beta.

Not rooted.

Just screen shot my main home screens (but not yet folder contents). I used to do this regularly with my last Note to allow me a reference point and note of where everthing was or is.

Useful if you delete an app and then later try and remember what it was. Gives you a historical record.

I just hadn't got round to doing it yet.

[Though I couldn't move everything over from my old Note because of the way it died, it was useful to take pix of the various screens and folder contents when building my Note 8 environment.]

I have a friend that this has happened to-twice. There is a setting that she is now very careful to make sure is switched OFF as we are fairly certain it is the culprit in her case. It states that if you have 15 incorrect attempts to unlock your phone it will factory reset. She has left her phone in her purse with it bumping up against other objects and trying to turn on. By the time she realized what she was hearing it was too late and she would be watching the phone reset!

My phone has never been locked.

When I say 'Locked' I mean that you have to swipe, use a pattern, iris scan etc to get past the lockscreen when you want to use your phone. That lock. If the phone keeps trying to get past that unsucessfully 15 times and that particular safety feature is active it will reset your phone.

OK. Plausible. It's on swipe and my UAG is still stuck in transit from Hong Kong so it slides all over the place and the cat jumps on it. So definitely feasible. If I'm out, it's in a shoulder holster.

Hopefully the case will finally arrive in the next few days and afford it both protection and friction on the back.

But surely the power key has to initiate and that's not getting touched?

Have you loaded any recent apps lately? Have you tried to clear the cache?

I clear the cache very regularly ATM. I'm loading new apps all the time. I just ditched a FOREX graphing app after 6 hours that was giving problems. Might have been that.
