My wife has just got the S3,Now looking at the wireless part of it if i click on the advance you get this:

Check if wifi internet service is available when ap connected

Now if you tick this then it will allways use wifi if its there and not the mobile network?

If you have a WiFi router when you open the phones WiFi connection, it will ask for the password of your WiFi router. Enter your routers password and it's ready to use. :)

Hi

Thanks for your reply yes i knew how to connect to wifi but what i would like to know is if i tick this: Check if wifi internet service is available when ap connected will the phone allways use wifi rather than the mobile data?

Not sure what ap means? is that mobile data?

I am no expert have just started using my Samsung Galaxy S3. But I notice when using the mobil apps of a full web site they seem to run much faster then just using my phones service provider. Another item I notice if I turn off the phones WiFi the next time I look it's turned back on.

She doesnt seem to have the problem wifi coming back on,She just wants to make sure that the phone uses wifi where she can at mates house in a cafe if its free,So then she isn't using her very limited mobile data plan.

what that tick will do is check if your ap or access point has internet access not needed and in some case will error even if you have internet access with the phone and ap.

there is an always on option under advanced settings which will explain that.

Ok so then thats not what she is after then,Is there anything on the phone that will make sure it will allways use wifi before using the mobile network.

I believe that if the phone is connected to WiFi it will not use phone data. Even if the WiFi is not connected to the Internet.
In that case you would have to turn off your WiFi.
I think that is how it works and I am not aware of a setting for it.
Good luck!

Once you connect to a Wi-Fi router it will always use Wi-Fi for the connection. That said MMS and a few other apps require Data for the connection instead of Wi-Fi even if connected to Wi-Fi.

Its for when she is out so it doesn't connect to the mobile internet even if there isn't wifi,Just so she doesn't use all of her limited interent use.

airplane mode would stop it all calls and internet. or look in settings for a mobile data on off option.

Pull down the home screen, you will see the shortcut to mobile data along the top of the screen if you scroll sideways, switch it on when you want it and switch it off when you don't. Phil
p.s. you can switch Wi-Fi on and off from here as well.

Thank you to both of you i am aware about mobile data,That would be the last thing she would do as turning it off would mean no picture messages.

She has tried turning on wifi when she wasn't actually connected to a wifi network,But the mobile network still gets used untill you have a connection with a wifi network.

Wigfield - I am not sure who your service provider is, but mine is at&t and they have a smart wifi app that automatically connects to wifi when it is available, whether at home or out and about.
