What do people think of this CPU?.. Its Only i can get a bundle with this mobo fan and 4gig ram for pretty cheap?. Thing is i can get the full thing for pretty cheap!. Cheers guys!

It's a design that's over 5 years old, and was decidedly "budget" way back then. If that's all you can afford, I suppose that a minimalist Linux distro can keep it chugging for a while. But I'd be more inclined to save up for something more recent and/or less crippled.

For a real-world example, I might use a machine like that as a dedicated music player (maybe with a web browser) to keep on the side table at my couch to be a glorified Ipod. Or I might load Windows XP on it and use it to download videos from my TiVo boxes. Or load a minimalist Linux distribution on it, and give it to a child to learn on. Something simple, and mostly single-tasking. I wouldn't want to use it as my everyday computer though.

Aww right okie doki then, Will be no good for me then, Well it looks like i am going to have to save a little bit more, What i am trying to do is upgrade my computer i have to with no board cpu ram and hdd but really i wanna do it as cheap as poss and tha AMD was a bargin was like 60 quid for the lot, So could you recomend any thing else?

Are you looking for a guts upgrade for a desktop? (mobo/cpu/heatsink/fan/ram) or something else? I know a few places you can investigate as your in the UK

If you're in need of a motherboard and CPU, you might look into the AMD A-series APU with an inexpensive compatible motherboard. The APU has ATI graphics built in, so that saves you the cost of a video card. And the performance of even the cheapest A-series APU will blow away any Athlon brand CPU. And honestly I can't find anything with a better price/performance ratio.

For a new mobo, APU and DDR3 RAM you're looking at more like

yeah im just looking to rip out the insides and change there for something a little faster to what i have at the mintue thats all, But i am on a tight bugdet thats all. Erm if you could pass them places on then it would be greatly appriciated like. Speed deamon i have been looking on ebays and that athlon II x2 with Mob and ram is like 90 quid all in but i dont know if it it K10 Architeture, So do you think the other one you suggested would be the best bet to have a little look at?

Take a look here to get you started chap, Keep in mind these are built and shipped bundles so you could try pricing up the components individually on the same site to see how much your saving.

A quick example,

Yes, for brand new. The best deals can be had when someone has to sell a recent purchase quickly, but those are rare, and for each bona fide one there are a hundred dodgy ones. Right now AMD is a great bargain, and much cheaper than Intel overall. (Just don't get any ideas with that E350 combo on the Novatech page. The E350 is a low power chip like Intel's Atom -- it's a real weakling!) Any of the Trinity (Piledriver core) APUs will give you almost top shelf performance at a bottom shelf price. Even the slightly older Llano APUs (that you might see steeply discounted) offer good performance and excellent value.

Yeah, cheapest is usually "cheap and nasty" plus that E350 is only a dual 1.6, I wouldnt bother with anything less than 2.5ghz myself, depending on the intended use.

Save up a while longer, the Athlon ll X2 is VERY feeble. I'm currently running a phenom ll X4 @ 3.3GHz with 8Gb DDR3 @ 1600. I do a lot of virtualization, and I've had VirtualBox running with 3 Windows 2008 servers, a Win XP and 3 Ubuntu Desktops and no noticeable performance hit over running XP or Ubuntu natively. The Host OS is Linux with a 3.x kernel, can't say how well it'd run under Redmond's finest.

Aww well back to the drawing board i go then lol. I think i am just going to save up and get a better set of stuff, There is a Bulldozer 4 core 3.2ghz with 4gb ram and a Asus mobo on ebay for 150 i think i might just go for that, That was my plan before any ways but i wasnt using it fore gaming and when i done some research that bundle was ideal for gaming so i was wondering if i were to tone it down a bit i could have found something for cheaper to suit my needs, As the machine is used for mainly office PS and ripping/Burning i do some Audio and Video editing but nothing much. i really appriciate the time you guys have spent writing your replys thank you !..
