An African Tablet

Well it states it was made in China. Does the Nexus 7, and other tablets/computers sale for the same prices as they do in the USA? Will the N7 sell for $199 or equivalent in Africa? I really don't know how it works.

I agree. It would seem $350 is expensive for most Africans.
He is also hoping to sell his tablet - which runs on the Google Android operating system - to the Nigerian government and plans to have at least one computer in each local government area.
It seems he will market to the urban areas more than rural areas, but 350 is still steep price.

Ahh sorry I do not have one unfortunately :-(

I can't say sadly.

I think there have been very good reviews on the 10 incher of the 2nd generation.

It has a 1.5 ghz Snap dragon CPU and 1 GB ram and only cost I think it was R2000 which is about how many dollars is that now?

I think that is 250 USA dollars.

3G, GPS and android 4!

It looks like great value for money considering the rest of the over priced stuff we have to pay for.

Not a bad price but I think it might be slightly more though.

Maybe Rands 2500?

I can't really remember but people have been giving them good reviews from what I hear.

Here I found a good article!

OH MY HELL!

NO

I am not paying R3500 for the 10 incher!

THEY ARE CRAZY IN THE HEAD MAN!

I may as well get the 10 inch smart tab form Vodacom for that price!!!

That is ridiculous!

I can get with that kind of cash, a DUAL CORE 1.2 ghz cortex a9 or something 10 inch SmartTab form Vodafone / Vodacom.

They are nuts!

Why don't they design their own devices, setup a manufacturing plant and give poor Africans jobs? I think poor people need good jobs not tablets.

Wouldn't it be nice of Apple and Google to setup a manufacturing plant and give poor Americans jobs also? I'm sure not alot of poor here are buying ipads, maybe the cheaper tablets but not ipads.

I agree that American corporations should foster American industry, so that maybe Americans can pull themselves up by their own bootstraps.

By the same token, I believe that we Americans, who even the poorest among us are far more wealthy than the citizens of many African nations that were devastated in part by the US-USSR proxy wars, have some moral obligation to help people in far more dire situations than ours to be able to do the same.

Yes it would be nice. And the worst of us here in the US of A do not have it as bad as many living in Africa.

I recall an article a year or so ago that explained specifically why Apple could not build plants in this country. People tend to think building a plant here is easy and we can do it cheaper. Sadly, we CAN build consumer electronics products in this country, but choose not to for many reasons.

When I was building Palm Pilots, we did it for less cost per unit than those in China that built some products. On the other hand, we say plenty of electronic toys from China we could not build as cheaply.

You can, but it's expensive isn't it? I'm thinking of the Made in America Google Nexus Q which is $300 and the Made in PRC Apple TV which is $100. AFAICT they both pretty much do the same thing.

Problem is, I think a lot of it is built too cheaply, e.g. crappy $70-$80 ICS 4.0 tablets. Then there's lot of product safety toy recalls, usually it's toxic lead paint or small parts breaking off AFAICT.

That is certainly part of it. As I said, we could build Pilots for less money than the Chinese, so we can do it. Get rid of the Unions, restrictive regulations, and a few other things, and we could perhaps build more products in this country.

Problem is, I don't think there's many Americans who would really be wanting to earn less than $1-2 bucks an hour, working 12-14 hours a day, 6 days a week, sleeping in a factory dorm, only seeing close family once a year, with a 2 day standing room only train journey to get home, making TVs, tablets, laptops, Blu-ray players, phones, toaster ovens, kettles, routers, toys, shoes, shirts, dresses, pants, etc. Which is probably what they'd have to do, to compete with the Chinese on low-cost consumer products.

However the cost of making consumer products in China is becoming more expensive these days, especially in the developed cities like Shenzhen, Beijing, Shanghai and Xiamen. Maybe Africa will become the world's factory in the future?

Hey Bob, I respect your right to speak your mind, but if you're going to bring partisan politics into the issue, could you please start a new thread in the Politics section?

I've been told by moderators that it's the policy here. I'd prefer to keep on talking about the non-political aspects of the African tablet where I'm used to it, and not have to remember to go to the Political section. I hope you understand. Thanks!

Not wanting to get into the whole single/dual core arguement.

But you should look into the specs on the snapdragon. Its the latest qualcom system on a chip processor.

http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snapdragon_(system_on_chip)

It may be single core but is a beast.
Alot of manufactures are choosing this chip for mid and upper teir phones and tablets. There is actually shortage of Snapdragon S4 soc now.

Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 chip shortage extending to 2013 | News | TechRadar

The reason why so many manufactures are flocking to it is because it delivers the blazing speed of a dual core with the reliability and stability of a good single core cpu.
Snapdragon S4 stays cool under pressure. Does not melt butter.
wait that might be the snapdragon S4 which is dual core but the S2 is also very cool running under power use.

My Transform Ultra has a 1GHz snapdragon and right out of the box keeps up with most dual core in phones and tablets.
I know Quadrant scores are not everything when it comes to overall performance you have to look at how the whole device functions but they are useful talking CPUs.
a stock transform ultra scores just over 2100 points on quandrant standard. 80 fps in the graphics test is no joke. I ran N64oid with no trouble before I started overclocking.
Im overclocked at 1612GHz smartassv2 and scored a 2989 quadrant topping 90fps. Smooth flawless running phone.

For me a Snapdragon is a selling point. It seems alot of manufactures agree.
Smart TVs, medical devices to use Snapdragon - TVs - CNET - CNET Asia

So if you are wondering about price you get what you pay for as always. And having one of the best processors chipsets made does come with a price, not a bad one not cheap. Ive played with some of the cheap chinese made tablets and thats what they realy are. Cheap!

WOW!!

That is some very interesting stuff with that SnapDragon CPU, wow interesting how a good solid Single Core can be good (maybe better?) as a dual core... :)

Thank you very much for those interesting articles I will definitely check em out!

Shot / Thanks! ;)

Ja... I don't know how well the whole "Wise SA Touch Tablets" group is doing actually.

Hmm I have not seen them like any where for sale sadly not in "Incredible Connection" or even "Hi-Fi Corp" advertising... :(

That is not a good sign sadly...

I don't think it is going too well but I could be very wrong.

There is also another South African tablet group with a Dual Core A9 Cortex CPU under the hood... they are doing okay I guess.

I have seen their advertising quite a lot.

In PEP Stores all across the country.

Hmmmm I am trying to remember their name now???

Dang

I will remember it later I think.

Net surfer touch or something?

I think haha :)

It will come back to me later I will remember just can't think of it right now haha.

@ Bob

I don't want to be rude but I 200% agree with Speed Daemon ... make another thread if you want to discuss politics. Not the place for this I guess or maybe this actually is a political thread?

Ugh whatever :)

I can never make up my mind about things hahahaa :D

HA!

Yes it IS a Netsurfer!!

Here is another South African Tablet yeah we rule! :D

NetSurfer (SHIT web site though! :D)
