Android 4.4 tv box problems

I have an Android 4.4 KItKat M8N tv box and I am running it on Kodi 16.1 Jarvis. As it is an older TV box is there a way upgrading with other firmware so I can run Kodi 17/18 on it to get a better stream and more up-to -date addons?I have spent days trying to find addons that work on it but invariably most do not work and at times it's quite slow.The reason also why I'm trying to keep the box is that it has worked well and I would like to get it up-and -running again rather than bin it and buy another.I would appreciate any advice and help to try and at least get the TV box working again to a reasonable level.
