android 4 problems

my android 4 started shutting its self down and Verizon said do a soft boot and it quit working all together the screen is locked , will charge and shut off and on and can call emergency # only what the heck is wrong with it

Try factory resetting it, backup anything important first, and if that doesn't put it right, could be a fault with it. Although shutting down can indicate the battery is on it's way out. What make and model is your phone and how long have you had it?

You can factory reset from recovery mode. Here are instructions for doing that from Nexus phones - hopefully that's what you mean by 'Android 4'. Ignore the first bit about doing a reset from settings, given your phone's shutting down before you can get to settings ;)

The OP mentioned Verizon, so likely not a Nexus 4.

OP, We REALLY need some more info about your device to be of much help.

It's not a Nexus 4, they don't work on Verizon. I doubt a factory reset will do any good unless it's a faulty app and if that is the problem it shouldn't require a full reset to correct it.

Probably one of 3 things:
1. Battery failure. Probably the least likely cause, but if shutdowns are totally random and especially if it happens when the phone is just sitting unused this could be it.
2. Other hardware problem, particularly overheating. Does the phone seem to run excessively hot before a shutdown, especially when gaming for example?
3. Faulty software. Does the phone shutdown when running anything in particular? Have you installed any new software lately?
