Help Android 6 WiFi problem

Hi,

I upgraded to Marshmallow the other day, and ever since then when I connect to my WiFi network at work it connects and then a couple of seconds later drops the connection. It then repeats this process continuously.

The WiFi network has no internet connection and it seems to be after that message appears that it drops the network connection. But I don't want to connect to it for internet access, it's simply a network for controlling and monitoring equipment that we use via a couple of apps.

In the previous version it would connect to the WiFi network and allow me to use the apps to control my equipment. Then if I needed internet it would simply use my 4G connection for that automatically.

Have they changed how Android handles WiFi networks in version 6? How can I get my phone to hold a WiFi connection that doesn't have internet?

I am getting the a similar problem.

Just upgraded to M. Looks pretty much the same as L.

My Wi-Fi passwords were blown away, so I had to renter them. M will connect for a few seconds, then I get a "connection failure" message. I have tried 5.0, 2.4 and the 2.4 guest connection. ALL experience the same problem! I am running a TPLink Archer C7 router.

I tried rebooting the router but that did nothing. I tried rebooting the phone but that also did nothing.

So what now Google?

Just spoke to Google about this issue. Not very helpful. Sent me to SAFE MODE, where the problem did not occur.

So they are blaming it on "some app". They guess that "some app" has not been updated to work with Android M, so is causing the problem. They suggest I uninstall all apps and reinstall each one by one until I find out which is causing the problem.

Well gee thanks Goofle!

I have more than a hundred apps installed, so that is not a reasonable approach at all. I did not have any problems with 5.1.1 so I am going to try to return to the old Android release.

Doing a search on "android 6.0 OR marshmallow wiFi connection problem", I get a lot of hits.

OK, poked around at some Wi-Fi apps I have on the phone and seemed to have fixed the issue.

I disabled two apps WiFimatic and WiFi Privacy. Then I rebooted the phone. Now I have a solid wiFi connection.

So it does look like it was an app problem. But why those apps worked fine in 5.1.1 but not in 6.0 is an open question.

It would have been helpful if Google support had suggested that we look at Wi-Fi apps on the phone and first try to disable them individually, rather than a blanket "remove all apps and start reinstalling them one by one", which got my BS detector fired up.

Stock Android 6.0 on Nexus 5 here, didn't restore from backup after resetting when I first noticed the problem. Still cannot connect to WiFi since update. The only good thing for me is this is a side phone, I'm weary on updating my Nexus 6 after my issues with the Nexus 5.

what are wifi apps? i'm having major wifi connectivity issues.

It's a huge issue on Marshmallow

(OP said they were at work so any router actions below would not be applicable. Check with IT dept if having wifi issues at work)

Try these possible solutions:

Disable ipv6 on your router
Reset network connections on your phone
Reboot your router
Clear cache partition on your phone
LAST RESORT: factory reset your phone

Good luck and hope this helps.

I followed @jojo99 advice with the app, I found google connectivity services had permission to modify system settings. I turned the permission off, and the result seems more stable. Prior to this, I had to use the WPS pushbutton.

There are some good ideas here, but all you have to do is uncheck the box for automatic network switching in the network settings. Your WiFi will stay on until out of range and it will still go back to your cell network automatically. It's generally a good idea to turn your WiFi off when you leave the house anyway.

Hi. Only a temporary workaround for the WiFi connection problem that I found. If you turn the phone off, then turn the phone back on whilst holding the volume up button continuously until the phone fully boots up. This gives a solid connection. Hope this helps some of you out there.

I don't have Android 6, I am running 5.1.1 however i am having the same issue and it seems its the same for alot of people. I spent the last 2 days trying to fix the connection between my router and my phone. In the end all it took was me to login to my router, change the SSID and password, power off and on the router, forget network of old connection, and when all is booted back up and ready to go, have another stab. It should connect. Mine changed straight away to connecting, then it connected faster than before. Hope this can help some of you out there. :)

After a second update of V6, found my patchy wifi was down to an app called wifimanager. Just removed it now no problems

The next "trick" works for me:

- go to Settings

- go to Network connections> Tethering and Mobile hotspots

- turn Mobile Hotspot to ON

- wait 10 sec's and turn Mobile Hotspot to Off

And I can activate WiFi.

Sometimes I have to do it twice, but in General it works after the first shot.
