Help Android 7.x OTA for the N6

TexasBadger

Android Enthusiast
It popped up about an hour ago in my notifications. I run my stock N6 on Sprint in suburban Dallas. The OTA install went smoothly. The only glitch was that 43 apps from Amazon had to be individually reinstalled.

I ran with it this morning as I had not heard of any major issues with the update. One issue I had was that it would not take the sim unlock pin once restarted. Had to wait until my tries ran out, then rebooted and all was well.

Update was smooth, seems to be running well. Split screen is quite nice, not sure how much I'll use it though as generally I would only use this function for my banking app and say a calculator. Although the banking app seems to stay logged in once you have both apps running and you refocus on the app it logs you out. Security function I guess.

I like the new notifications and the menu system. Not a fan of the new Easter egg tho.. :mustachedroid:

Still have not received Android 7 for my N6 here in the Rochester, NY area. Is it going our slowly? In the past I've usually gotten it within a couple of weeks of release.

So will this be an OTA update Google sends out to our devices or is it something we will have to install ourselves? I am running Android M ,6.0.1.
While getting Android N would be nice, I am OK with Android M for now. My Nexus 6 isn't under warranty and hasn't been for over a year so I am a bit apprehensive about doing anything that might screw it up.
Yes I know Nexus phones are supposed to be nearly impossible to brick, but I would be the person not only to brick it, I would have some note 7 type incident

Your not missing much IMHO at least. I have had 7.1.1 on my N6 for some time now and it is the same as always.............the new stuff is a gimmick in my opinion. Don't bother with it unless you like to fiddle around with your phone.

Are you running a custom ROM? Or did you maybe mean 7.0.0? (given 7.1.1 was released just last week)

A custom Rom. It is Dirty Unicorns. I think I may be giving the phone a rest seeings how I just bought the Mate 9 and it has to be on GSM. Been looking for a larger screen VZW phone for awhile and nothing sparks my interest. Just the Mate 9.

BTW...it seems that the 7.1.1 update serves the Pixel phones much better than the older phones the majority have :)

I flashed 7.1.1 and to this point, I've had zero issues. I will see how it pans out as I just updated my phone yesterday.

I just sideloaded the OTA file. Didn't feel like waiting this time. 7.0's been working pretty well and i didn't have anything better to do ... ;)

Seemed to go pretty smooth.

I still still don't see any upgrade available on my Nexus 6 running vanilla 7.0. Can anyone help me get the update?
It's not rooted and was recently factory reset too.

Go to https://developers.google.com/android/ota and get the OTA to take 7.0 up to 7.1.1 You can sideload it pretty easily. Instructions are there. If you have any questions specifically about them, we'll be happy to walk you through it. :)

Thanks!
I'm following your instructions and downloading the file (yes, Australia is great but my Internet connection still consists on a 5MB/sec ADSL2+ :) )
Just a couple of points:
1. To get "adb" on my Mac, I followed instructions from https://stackoverflow.com/questions/31374085/installing-adb-on-mac-os-x/32314718#32314718, in case someone else stumbles here and can use the pointer.
2. Is there an explanation for why my phone didn't get 7.1 pushed to it yet? From all the announcements I sort of expected it to be pushed to my phone automatically, just like 7.0 did when it was released. Just very curios.

UPDATE: Got 7.1.1 on my phone. Still curios as to why it haven't been pushed automatically. Thanks again for the pointer.

Nobody seems to know why 7.1.1 hasn't been pushed.

There can be a few reasons why phones don't get updates pushed to them. The first and most likely is Google just hasn't gotten around to you yet. I also didn't get the update and had to push it to my device with the OTA just like you did. It took quite a while for me to get 7.0, too, but that one was eventually pushed to my phone ... about two months after it was in general release.

There really is no way to tell where a specific phone is on the rolling release schedule, so you either have to be patient or do it yourself. The good news is that when the OTA's are released, Google does make them available for manual updating.

Another reason would be if you had rooted and modified the device at some point. Even if you unrooted, the file signatures wouldn't match so if the OTA was eventually pushed it would have failed.

what's this 7.0 you speak of?
I'm on 6.0.1
Flash!!! I'm on 7.1.1 and love it. [emoji1]

STRANGE problem. I cannot get my PC to see my Nexus 6 to flash the February update. Any ideas? I'm on Windows 10 64 bit and have flashed before (to 7.1.1). Bootloader is unlocked, USB Debugging is on, but there is not a handshake occurring for the key exchange. I have the file transfer protocol set to MTP.

***UPDATE*** I changed USB cable and it works now. I had forgotten there are some that will only charge. What a pain in the behind.

Annnnd now it's March. checked for update, Tmo...
"your system is up to date"
6.0.1

yeehaa
For chrissakes , the S6 guys will have it before me. What gives?
Wow, the T-Mobile site makes for some depressing reading..

I cannot even see the Nexus 6 in the update cycle for Nougat..

With 7.1.1 being the last OS update for the N6 why not root and side load? I know security updates will be a pain to apply afterwards, but at least you'll have your update.
