Android and multitouch

Can someone fill me in on the history of android multitouch?

I read somewhere about iPhone OS monopolizing the multitouch system and disallowing other companies from using it or something.

If so, why does my HTC Legend have multitouch?

And how many multitouch points does android have? I heard the iphone has 8 and the iPad has 10 or something.

Multitouch points depend on hardware, not software. Devices with the MaxTouch sensor can register, what, ten points? Whereas Clearpad 2000 only does two points.

The Legend's not the only one with multi-touch. Everything that runs 2.1 and up, or possibly 2.0, has multi-touch enabled software. The Galaxy S line, the Droid/Milestone line, etc all do multi-touch.

IIRC the concept of multitouch was not invented by apple either. Instead it is an older technology invented by a company that IIRC is suing apple as well. There was an article about that here sometime ago.
