There has been some concern about smartphone apps in recent weeks after a malware app worked its way into the Android store that sent premium-rate text messages to make money for criminals.

Google should seriously consider using a similar approach to what some of the major Linux Distros use when adding [packages to their repositories. Let devs submit apps to the store, but let the apps go through a testing phase with users who choose to be alpha and beta testers, before they are added to the market for public consumption. in this way the testers are able to uncover bugs and potential problems with apps before they are released. It doesn't mean that everything will be caught, but it should drastically cut down on this kind of malware.

I'm all for this idea. It's a little more like Apples walled-garden approach to apps, but limited to security testing instead of all the other crap Apple checks to make sure that the app is OK for us to use.

Yes! Google has to come out actively and look out to set up some really secure licensing system for the Android market...
