Android Auto in car model that won't accept aftermarket stereo

I'd like to use Android Auto in a 2005 Acura RL but it won't accept an aftermarket stereo. Is there any way to use Android Auto, or anything similar, in a car that won't accept an aftermarket stereo? Can an Android phone be set up to act like an Android Auto unit if mounted on a dash holder?

For reference, is this the Acura RL head unit that's fitted at the moment?

The actual unit looks like a standard double-DIN, but looks like the fascia and fixings could be a problem, if there no aftermarket ones that suit.

I'm not familiar with Acura cars of course, so can't help much more.
