Android-Based Home Security on The Cheap

For those in the US, this has got to be the deal of the year. Best Buy is offering a closeout price on the Verizon variant LG Optimus Exceed 2 phone for $14.99! It's not the world's best phone, but it does have a 5mp camera. Team it up with the free Alfred app and the phone or tablet you already have, and viola... you have an HD security camera with live and recorded video, still frame capability, motion detection, push notifications and day/night mode. To get those features at HD resolution would normally be in the $200 per camera range (Dropcam HD or Nest Cam). You can add as many cameras as you want (including repurposed old phones or tablets you may have lying around), and there's even a Web app (only works with the latest Firefox) that allows tilt/pan/zoom that's not available in the mobile app. The mobile app will use the settings you make in the Web app though... which is a good thing, because the Web app is otherwise pretty poor.

Online orders are limited to two phones per person, but the in-store limit is three. If you have any interest, act fast, because this deal won't last (I bought three, and may go back for more). Oh… and if you have no interest in activating the phone (like me), but only using it on wifi, here's how: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uq0Xt23akgE
Enjoy!

 Still listed as $14.99 right now…
