Android Contacts - help please

Navrig

Newbie
I need help with my contacts on my HTC Magic. They are set to synch with Google and generally they have done so however I screwed up data management and now my contacts are almost unworkable.

What I did was:

1. Transferred my old mobile contacts onto the HTC and Google - no problem.

2. I then created a new Group in Google contacts and imported a CSV file consisting of client contacts (exported from an Outlook file) into that Group.

The problem is that I did not properly check how many client contacts there were AND I did not check that the Outlook export/Google import worked properly before forcing an overnight synch.

3. I then discovered that there were far too many client contacts (whole business rather than just one department!!) and that the 0 was dropped from the start of all mobile numbers. This rendered the contacts unusable due to the HTC not being able to cope with the quantity and the fact than none of the mobile numbers would dial.

4. So, being very clever, I simply deleted the Group thinking that an overnight synch would remove them from the HTC.

I then discovered that deleting a Group was different from deleting the contacts in a Group. So I now had all these client contacts mixed in with my personal numbers.

5. I spent a little while selecting large groups of the unwanted contacts in Google and deleting.

6. The problem is that the synch is not deleting them from the HTC.

How do I deleted thes unwanted contacts from the standard Android contacts app?

A cyber beer for anyone who helps me.

Gutted for you. Cannot say I have had that issue, just thought this served a bump back to page 1.

Hope you get it sorted.

Argh, sucks to be you, that's quite a hole you've dug there. :(

Have you made changes to your contact data in Google, or is it still "in sync" with what's in Outlook? Could you "revert" to your Outlook data by deleting everything in Google and starting over with fresh data?

I think that what I would do is, I would first create one sample contact in Google, with every field filled in, to make sure I know the proper format for getting data back in. Then I would export everything to CSV (from Outlook or Google, whichever suits you best (but beware that the Google import/export does NOT do a full round trip (about 1/3 of the fields aren't imported/exported correctly, or at all)), and then open the file in a spread sheet to "massage" it into submission.

Good luck. :o
