android dead icon?

i turned my motorola on this morning and the droid icon showed up lying on his back with a flap open showing a keypad maybe, i was not able to do anything then about 10 minutes later the phone was normal has anyone run into this and what is the problem and fix thanks

Does it look like this:

This is a screen of death, the Android version of a Sad Mac or BSoD. it just means the OS had a problem when booting or crashed. usually it fixes itself, but can be an early warning of a future problem. i suggest backing your device up.

Now, if it looks more like this:

That's the Android update screen, which means your phone/tablet found a firmware update and is installing it.

Both of the images provided above are part of the stock android recovery, which is what your phone booted into.

Can you give us more details on what phone you have?

it could be stock recovery but all my experiences with the first image are when the device in question crashes or has a problem when booting. in either case i never have any options found in a stock recovery, and often my personal data isn't wiped.

The first image is what you get when you manually boot into stock recovery. The second image is what you get when the device is flashing an ota/update.

it is the razr m and it was the first image in the reply by nickdalzell, so far so good no ill effects

When the device reboots into recovery and stays like that is usually the sign it's trying to take an ota update, but applying the update failed.
