Help Android "Device Protection"

I have a very simple situation, and even though over 1 billion Android phones were shipped
last year, I seem to be the only one complaining. I was having some problems with software
updates on my phone (Android 5.1), and my tech support suggested doing a factory reset. Ok,
I did that and now the phone askes for the original Google account name. I do not know what
that is, or the phone is somehow messed up. I called my wireless carrier, the phone
manufacturer, and Google, and they all say it's 'toast.' Seems like Google 'stole' my phone.
Should I just throw away the phone?

It wants the Google account that you set up on the phone. The same one you'd have had to enter anyway to log back in to your play store account after the reset.
