Apps Android Devs around Des Moines, IA ?

Andrude

Lurker
This is my attempt to see if there are any like-minded Android Developers in the central Iowa region. A couple of things I'm thinking here are 1. the potential for a dev/users group meetup on a regular basis in Des Moines, and, more pointedly, 2. the outside chance of meeting someone else in the area who is serious about creating and monetizing Android apps through some kind of virtual association..

I don't want to talk about the feet of snow or sub-zero temps ! :D

I am in WDM. I am a developer and have been developing in .Net, Java, ColdFusion, old Microsoft technologies and whatnot since forever. I keep wanting to do an Android app, but I have a creativity block. I just don't know what I want to write. Maybe I should just start with a hello world app.

To state the obvious, Android is a rapidly evolving technology, but, thankfully it isn't inherently difficult. I'm sure with your background (especially the Java stuff) you can/will be up to speed in little time. If you haven't been through Google's Android tutorial projects, that would be an ideal place to start. They are pretty well written, and hit a good cross-section of functionality. Once you're past those, I would say it's time to grab a good Android reference (or just use the web .... like the forums here !), and let creativity be your guide. When you think about the convergence of internet, camera, audio, accelerometer, multitasking, telephony, etc. technologies, the sky is truly the limit. As a ridiculous example, how about an alarm clock that plays your favorite song to wake you, until you grab the phone and give it a mild shaking , upon which it brings up your favorite weather site so you know what to wear? :-)

Have fun, and let me know if you decide this technology is something you want to make your mark on the world with !
