Android & email sync

I'm new to Android, having just bought a Samsung Stratosphere (I've been a Palm & Blackberry user for many years). I'm having trouble with email sync -- I get the emails just fine, but the phone doesn't recognize emails I've read or deleted on my PC, and vice-versa. So I have to do double work in cleaning them up. Verizon told me that's just an Android shortcoming, which I find hard to believe. Any advice?

Which email app? Which e-mail provider? Have you set up with IMAP in the email app and enabled IMAP on the provider side?

It's primarily gmail, but the issue is not getting the emails, the issue is having the emails recognize actions done to them on other devices.

With GMail, are you using the actual GMail app, or the email app?

The GMail app works via IMAP, and it should be seeing the same thing as your computer does, unless you're using POP3 to access your GMail account...

What do you press to view your email? a GMail app or an email app?

And how are you using GMail at home, from your browser, or via a program like Outlook / Windows Live mail / Thunderbird / Eudora / etc?

It turns out I was not using the app. The Verizon sales guy set up the email when activating the phone, and I didn't realize the email account he added didn't use the app. Using the app solves the original issue, as suggested by various comments above.

Thanks to everyone for their help!

Sigh. Gotta love these VZW guys. It's like they were never trained, sometimes....

Glad you got it figured out.
