Apps Android Emulator

Hey,
I'm really new to Android programming and I got some noob questions hope you can help

I'm using Windows 7, running Eclipse and using the Android Emulator Advised to me by this site - http:// developer.android.com

But the Emulator is terribly slow!
It seems really impossible to program in such conditions.

So I wanted to ask:
1) How do you check the application you're writing?
2) Do you advise to use Eclipse?

I use my Android phone to test my apps. The emulator might run slowly if your computer can't handle it.
I use Eclipse to make my apps and it's one of the easiest ways to program apps.
