Help Android Encryption not an option in Security. Thoughts/Solutions? (BLU Studio Energy 4.4.2)

I recently bought a BLU Studio Energy as a travel phone/secondary phone. It is running Android 4.4.2, but it's not entirely stock.

This is where the problem lies. I'm told that usually in Security you have the option to turn on Encryption after you set a pin.

Unfortunately this is what I get...

Do you know of another way to turn full disk encryption on?

Do you know if rooting the phone will solve this, and if so, any suggestions about going about it? (http://androidforums.com/threads/root-blu-energy-help.904974/ talks briefly about rooting)

Has anyone had a similar problem (stock menu options missing, like encryption)?

I don't think a PIN is the security you need to enable encryption. I think you need at least a 6-digit password. Give that a try and see if it enables.

Tried both an 8 digit pin and a 12 char mixed password. neither one worked.

I just tried it with an old Samsung Galaxy S2 running CM11 (4.4.3) and the option to encrypt is there.

I'm wondering if it's something baked into the rom? Have you contacted BLU about it?

Haven't tried contacting BLU yet. I'll do that. I was talking with another owner of the Energy and they said they think the BLU skin just hid the option. Just a matter of finding a way to unhide it.

They might have moved it, as well. Samsung does that all the time.

I've seen a couple of Chinese devices where full device encryption hasn't worked or unsupported, and were fixed with a firmware update. You'd have to check with Blu about that.

Firmware update being different than a standard OTA update? I'm still waiting to hear back from BLU support.
