Help Android File Transfer (AFT)

Lurker
With my Samsung Tablet I can use AFT with my MacBook running El Capitan. My LG V10 cannot. I installed the USB driver that comes with the phone's installer. The phone can connect to the Windows bootcamp on the same laptop. I thought I had changed some setting by accident so I factory reset the phone. Still a no go. I enabled the Developer Options as well.

It should just connect and work.

WELCOME TO ANDROID FORUMS tnknights !

Did you enable USB De-Bugging in Developer Options?

This is all I could find regarding Mac & AFT w/Android devices:

To transfer files, Android File Transfer must be installed on your computer. Android File Transfer is compatible with Mac OS X 10.5 or later and Android 3.0 or later.

  1. Download and install Android File Transfer on your computer.
  2. Open Android File Transfer. (The next time you connect your device, it should open automatically.)
  3. Make sure your device’s screen is unlocked.
  4. Connect your device to your computer using a USB cable.
  5. On your device, pull down your notification drawer by swiping down from the top of the screen. Touch the USB for... notification and then Transfer files (MTP).
  6. Use the Android File Transfer window that pops up on your computer to drag and drop files.
  7. Disconnect the USB cable when you’re finished.
Trouble transferring files through USB
If you’re having trouble transferring files, try the following steps:

  • Try a different USB cable. Not all USB cables can transfer files.
  • Test the mini-USB port on your Nexus device by connecting your device to a different computer.
  • Test the USB port on your computer by connecting a camera or other device with USB.
  • Update your Android OS to the latest version available.
  • Restart your device.
  • Restart your computer.
Windows troubleshooting
  • Check your computer’s settings to make sure Windows automatically detects new hardware.
Mac troubleshooting
  • Make sure that Android File Transfer is compatible with your computer. You must have Mac OS X 10.5 or later and Android 3.0 or later.
  • Make sure the Android File Transfer application is open.

Um, pretty sure I covered that I use AFT with my Samsung tablet on the same computer that I'm trying to use my LG V10. There's no issue on the Mac as I use it a lot with my tablet. Using one of the wifi based solutions is really slow and not wanted.

Does anyone here actually use AFT, Mac OS X, and LG V10? Successfully?

I do appreciated you posting the article from Google.

By any chance have you updated your V10 to Marshmallow? (6.x?) Google in their infinite wisdom-less manner has decided to change the default connection in Marshmallow to charge only, meaning no data until you plug in the phone, pull down the menu and then select MTP mode for data. It doesn't remember the setting so you have to do it every time you plug it in.

No Marshmallow here. 5.1.1. I guess Verizon isn't ready for it. When I connect it brings up the installer. I've installed that driver as well as installed drivers from LG.com. After about 30 seconds the installer window closes. I can swipe down and make sure it's on MTP. no go. BUT! If connected as PTP (photos) it does connect as a camera. Very frustrating.

Just for arguments sake do you have access to a Windows machine (7 preferably) that you could try just to verify that the phone will connect in MTP mode?

Yup, as mentioned earlier I can connect to the boot camp partition on the same machine. That's why I know it's not a hardware or software issue on the laptop.
