Android File Transfer does not recognize device

Hello all,

Android File Transfer no longer recognizes devices on my Mac running OS X 10.10.5. It worked fine until I installed Samsung's Smart Switch software on my Mac.

Smart Switch did not do what I wanted so I uninstalled it according to Samsung's directions. Samsung tech support said to simply drag the application to the Trash bin (there is no uninstaller). I now suspect that process did not cleanly remove all files.

I had to reset my Galaxy S6 as it was not working properly thereafter. I then re-installed AFT on the Mac, but it still does not work. Moreover, intermittently my Mac hangs upon connecting my Galaxy S6 via its USB cable.

Has anyone had similar experiences? I saw this thread below, which is in the S4 forum.

I suspect there are some driver files remnant from Smart Switch that are interfering with AFT drivers. But I don't know where to go to manually remove all files related to Smart Switch.

Any other remedies....?

Thanks in advance.....

I know nothing about Macs, and maybe comparing Apples with lemons (almost literally) is a bad idea. However Kies (Smart Switch's forerunner) was a complete pig to uninstall properly on a Windows PC. To get rid of all traces of it required a registry cleaner. Now in my ignorance I have no idea if such a thing exists for a Mac, I'm just throwing my thoughts out there in the hope it will help.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply. No, there is no Kies on the Mac.

I'm not even sure the kind of "standard" driver Mac OS X uses for USB. Perhaps it uses a serial I/O driver instead of a dedicated USB driver. Not sure. But I strongly suspect a driver is blocking Android File Transfer from working.

In fact, Samsung Smart Switch says upon startup that AFT will not work until Smart Switch is uninstalled. What a piece of crap. Even T-Mobile tech support were telling me to never install Samsung utilities again. I learned my lesson...!

Alice,

I don't know. I didn't use Smart Switch to back up my phone. I was trying to use it to transfer files TO my phone. Believe it or not, Samsung tech support suggested I use it to do that function. What a joke.

The online Smart Switch articles said where the files get backed up. I recall reading that information. I just don't remember the details....

This is a late response, but might help others with the same problem. Do not assume, like me, there is no Kies on your Mac - even if it's not visible, or, as in my case, you never knowingly installed it!
Go to Samsung's website and click on the Kies Download button. Then select Uninstall. This worked for me - and without the need to fiddle with developer options.
