Help Android Gmail account

I just bought a G1 (rooted running 2.2 froyo) but someone else's gmail is set as the primary email so now i cant log into the marketplace. I googled ways to reset the primary email but id have to do the factory reset. If i do this wont it mean that my 2.2 firmware would go away (i'm new to android so i dont know how to root it again and id rather not mess around with it). What options do i have? Any help would be great.

A factory reset won't remove the 2.2 ROM nor will effect the root status of the phone, it will just clear all the settings, this is probably the best thing for you to do, that way you're sure that all of the previous owner's info is erased.
You should also be able to go to menu > settings > accounts & sync. Under there should be a Google account, remove that one and add your own.

k i hit the factory reset and it brought me to a screen (Android system recovery) which one do i click? This is my first time using an android phone btw.

Options alt +x - go to console (which is my best guess)
alt+t -usb ms toggle
alt+b backup/restore
alt f- flash zip
alt w- wipe
alt p partition sdcard
alt o- other
