Help Android locale settings - how important?

Hi everyone,
I recently bought a Xiaomi Mi 4C off ebay. It's arrived, and everything seems fine with it except for this: setting up the phone, I'm required to select a locale for the phone. It looks like the official MIUI OS for this particular model doesn't offer 'Australia' as an option. I've currently set it to 'China' (default). There are no issues with language or timezone, and it's able to make calls fine.

How concerned should I be? I've heard that there are some locale-specific apps that require the correct locale to be set? Is this true? And what apps would require this?

My old Redmi 2 didn't have a locale setting on it, is this a relatively new addition to Android?

Thanks!

Okay so I don't play Pokemon go, but would apps that have map/GPS functionality such as MapMyRun and so on function?

I believe the locale options are to do with how certain things are used and presented by services and apps, rather than geographical locations for Pokémon Go, etc. Things like date and time format, currency, etc. Having it as China might be OK as long as your currency is the Renminbi (CNY ¥), and dates formatted as YYYY-MM-DD.

It's a China phone bought via Ebay, shipped from Hong Kong most likely. So doesn't surprise me much that China is the default locale, and possibly China is its only locale.

Locale is a completely separate setting to time zone. On my Mac I have the time zone as China, because that's where I am of course, but the locale as United Kingdom, because I'm British. :)
