Android Music Player including audio files from apps

Simple question. Can I change where the stock music player is pulling the music from?
I haven't found a very easy way to do this, which to me is very disappointing. I did go through most all of my folders and moved anything that looked like an audio file into a new subfolder ".nomedia" (I read on another forum this was the solution). That is a fairly easy way to do it, but I think that should be un-necessary. It's time consuming and what if you move audio files into the ".nomedia" folder then screw up your app? Why can't you do something so simple that has been done many times before. For years and years in Microsoft's Media Player you can very easily right-click on any library and change the location for it to pull audio, video and pictures from.

How can I exclude Application's audio files from my Music Player? I am not very Android savy in terms of how the programming works. But I'd imagine if I go into my Assassins Creed folder and move all of the audio files into a ".nomedia" subfolder, they will no longer work in the game and the game might not work period. Needless to say all of the audio files from Assassins Creed show up in the Music Player.

I was frustrated over this with my Evo 4g and it continues to pester me as you're reading this on my new Galaxy S3.
